Since the 1980s, as the perception that tourism is also a kind of cultural phenomenon has spread, so-called “cultural tourism,” including “literary heritage” tourism, has become popular worldwide and has become the preferred target of the market.
literary tourism generally means visiting famous places related to writers or works. Regarding literary tourism, Herbert, D. argued that “literary places gain meaning in connection with writers and in the background of novels, and these places attract tourists and form part of the cultural heritage tourism landscape,” and that people visit places related to literature for various reasons.
As interest in literature increases and people’s visits increase, various measures are provided to attract literary tourists in places with literature-related resources. The quality of literary tourist attractions is created by combining the requirements of tourist attractions, such as attractive environments, convenient facilities and services, travel schedules, relevance to writers, composition of story backgrounds, values, nostalgia, memories, and symbols. It is necessary to closely examine these points at the policy level, develop or preserve literary relevance, and strive to improve general tourism attraction and accessibility.
In response, this paper examined how the historical and cultural origins and background areas of China’s four major historical novels, such as Romance of Three Kingdoms, The Water Margin and The Journey to the West are developed and used as high-quality “cultural tourism” resources.
