This paper aims at evaluating key issues in contemporary Islamic finance from the perspective of competing meanings of the ‘Islamic alternative.’ Regarding how to define ‘Islamicity’ of Islamic finance, ‘shariah-compliant’ approach has been in contrast to ‘Maqasid Shariah’ approach. Regarding how to define the relations between Islamic finance and conventional finance, there have been differing views between substitutive alternative and optional alternative for the status of Islamic finance relative to conventional finance. With these discursive debates in mind, the paper evaluates the gaps and contradictions between theoretical constructions and institutional practices of Islamic finance.
