The purpose of this study is to provide an environmental design improvement plan based on the supportive design theory by Ulrich (1984) for healing gardens in a representative general hospital in Seoul, Korea. The study started with an intensive literature review regarding Ulrich"s supportive design theory and principles and moved onto an analysis of key design elements in healing gardens in general hospitals in Korea. The supportive design theory mentioned areas where natural factors with positive effects on stress relief of the patient, analyzed various elements for the activities in gardens, based on three main factors for offering a healing environment: Providing a sense of control, fostering social support, and providing positive distractions. This theory provided a framework to evaluate the status of a healing garden in the Severance Cancer Center, which was the target study area. For the research method, a spatial analysis was conducted through a site analysis of the healing garden and observations of user behaviors. As the final phase, a design charrette which is a collective discussion method was conducted with interior design students to collect their opinions on newly proposed design alternatives, and derive design opinions for the improvement of a healing garden. Through this study, an empirical verification of Roger Ulrich’s supportive design theory was conducted and detailed plans for the healing garden elements considering individual spatial characteristics were developed.
