Orientalism provides a new perspective and theoretical framework for analyzing the relationship between the West and the East, especially when movies, novels, and video games have become the source of ideas for research. By integrating multidisciplinary knowledge, this paper made a qualitative and quantitative research on the aesthetic differences between the East and the West from the perspective of the theory of Orientalism, to make a preference analysis on the basis of a critical analysis of the design features of East Asian game characters in today"s video games, and comparison between them and Western characters in the games. The purpose of this research is to see how Orientalism has played its role in the design of game characters under the background of Western-centric culture, and to expose the false consciousness and their recreation of Eastern images by Westerners. As such, this paper conducts a comparative analysis on the images of East Asian and Western game characters to find out those features with high preference for East Asian characters as guide to direction of design in the future. The results and contents of the study are as follows.
First, according to the research purpose, four video games with user ratings above 7.0 are selected from the online game database. Second, the East Asian and Western male and female characters are selected from the four video games for classification and comparison. Third, analyze the design features of game characters, collect proper perceptual expressions and appearance describing expressions to design a questionnaire, and use T-Test (Student’s T-Test) for statistical analysis to find the significant differences. Fourth, analyze our preferences in image of East Asian game characters, and summarize the design features of the characters that can better satisfy the preferences.
Based on such research results, we look forward to finding East Asian character design features that suit players" preferences, and having more multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary researches that extend to the moral aspects and humanistic values, so as to break the dominance of the West in game culture, and ultimately pursue the richness, diversity and balance between Eastern and Western cultures, and inspire the future development of game culture.
