Background: Motion streaks, the smeared representation within the visual system of a moving stimulus due to the temporal integration or response persistence of cortical cells, are proven to facilitate the motion perception by providing the orientational information of the motion (Geisler, 1999). Objective: This study manipulates the physical and artificial motion streak following the moving object and examines how this artificial afterimage mediates the observers’ satisfaction of the video quality. Method: We quantified the degree to which the motion seems realistic using a 2IFC task and the Thurstonian scaling and examined if the artificial afterimage improved the sense of reality. We further conducted the reproduction task and compared the perceived length of the stimulus with or without the artificial afterimage. Results: By virtue of the artificial afterimage, the sense of reality of the moving object significantly increased. The object presented at 120Hz seems as realistic as the object presented at 1440Hz. A comparison of the perceived length of the moving objects showed that the artificial afterimage shortened the perceived length of the moving object. Conclusion: Results suggested that the human observers perceive the motion of objects with the artificial afterimage more realistic since the artificial afterimage erases the real afterimage. Furthermore, the motion perception can be distorted through the interaction between the spatial properties and the temporal change of the image. Application: This study psychophysically proved that putting artificial afterimage makes objects in videos look more realistic and provided insight about the underlying mechanisms where the perceived afterimage diminishes.
