The goal of this study is to look into the characteristics of disease vocabulary by confirming the entire vocabulary contained in the category of "disease(疾病)" in the Joseon Dynasty"s classificatory glossaries (類解類 譯學書), as well as to learn how people in the Joseon Dynasty recognized disease categories and disease-related vocabulary.
To accomplish this, we first collected all disease vocabulary from the six categorization lexicons and investigated disease vocabulary collection characteristics such as the overall scale and the lexical arrangement principle. Second, the meanings of each word were checked one by one, and the headwords and Korean equivalents were compared. Finally, based on its semantic properties, the vocabulary was divided into comprehensive vocabulary, vocabulary by body part and organ, vocabulary linked to treatment, vocabulary linked to medicine, and so on.
This study is significant because it investigates the conceptual categories of disease vocabulary included in the Joseon Dynasty"s classificatory glossaries(類解類 譯學書), and it may be used to develop a modern Korean diseases vocabulary ontology.
