The medical waste generation has shown tremendous amount of increase over the past decade mainly due to the increase of nursing facilities associated with the population ageing and the generation of waste related to the ongoing global pandemic of COVID-19. The gross production of medical waste between 2010 and 2018 had increased by 9.5% every year, doubling during the 8-year period. Of particular interest is the increase of highly infectious medical wastes that are generated from hospitals, treatment facilities, and self-quarantined population in their homes, which showed more than ten times of increase from 243 tons to 2,444 tons between 2008 and 2017. A decree recently issued by the Ministry of Environment in October 2019 ruling out the diapers from general medical waste is expected to further increase the portion of infectious waste in the total medical wastes and the increase of their calorific values. Waste incinerators of today adopt various advanced techniques, such as high temperature air supply, boiler operation at high temperature/pressure (4 MPa, 400°C), and low excess air combustion to achieve high combustion and heat recovery efficiencies, while meeting the stringent pollutant emission regulations w ... 전체 초록 보기
