The photovoltaic industry in the European Union is most competitive in the downstream part of the value chain but has lost their market shares in the in some of the upstream part of the value chain like solar PV cell and module manufacturing. In polysilicon production, it hosts one of the leading manufacturers, Wacker Polysilicon AG, whose production is sufficient for manufacturing 20 GW of solar cells.
In light of the higher ambitions on renewable energy use to reach net zero green-house gas emissions by 2050, a strategic interest to regain a competitive manufacturing base for solar cells has emerged in the last few years. Several projects to scale up manufacturing solar cells based on silicon or perovskite-silicon tandems are currently under execution. The same holds true for silicon ingot and wafer production.
