Tao Yuanming (365 or 352-427) is a poet who was active in the East Qin Dynasty (317-420) and Liu Song Dynasty (420-479), the beginning of the Southern Dynasties, and as is well known, he is referred to as the ‘pastoral poet’. It is well known that Tao Yuanming sang an aloof life in nature by enjoying rural life without serving as a government official. What was the later evaluation of the poems of Tao Yuanming, the pastoral poet who is well-known for such an image of a hermit? There was no evaluation of Tao Yuanming in 《Wentsintiaolung(文心雕龍)》by Liu Xie and 《Shihpin(詩品)》by Chung Jung placed Tao Yuanming as a "Chungpin". Tao Yuanminng began to be recognized only after entered in the Tang Dynasty and it was not until Su Shi in the Song Dynasty that he began to receive such high praise. In order to find out what kind of evaluation Tao Yuanming received from the editors of ancient poem anthologies in the Qing Dynasty, and which poems were loved enough to be included in those anthologies, the current author selected 《Goshiuan(古詩源)》and 《Gishishangxi(古詩賞析)》as ancient poem anthologies in the Qing Dynasty. As a result of analyzing Taoyuanming"s poems, which were commonly selected and included to arrange as a list in the two anthologies, Tao Yuanming was not the pastoral poet just in the meaning who enjoyed nature and rose above the world. Tao Yuanming actively expressed the life he had chosen by showing the state of his seclusion, represented by alcohol, chrysanthemum, and farming, and put the agony of an intellectual and the pain of loyal servant who watched the chaotic politics in his poems while going through a dynasty changing period of extreme political turmoils, when the East Qin Dynasty changed to the Liu Song Dynasty in the Southern Dynasties. It was found that the poems of Tao Yuanming, which put into and revealed the actual pain in the dynasty changing period, had the meaning of poems in the East Qin Dynasty of which the anthologies in the Qing Dynasty intended to see through Tao Yuanming.
