Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman and August Wilson’s Fences have some similarities even though August Wilson denied that Fences was influence by Death of a Salesman. Above all, both plays are set in the similar time and place, the mid-twentieth century and American large cities. Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman and Troy Maxon in Fences have some characteristics in common. Willy and Troy possess American Dream, a dream to succeed especially in materialistic wealth as well as to have freedom and equality but they failed to achieve it. Willy and Troy have an affair with another woman. Willy’s infidelity leads to his first son’s, Biff’s failure in life and Troy loses his wife owing to his betrayal.
Willy can be considered as a tragic hero according to Miller’s criteria in his essay “Tragedy and the Common Man.” Willy is a common man in a modern society and tries to protect his dignity and refuses to remain passive in securing his image of his rightful status. However, he lacks a quality of self discovery and we can not call him a perfect tragic hero. Troy has worked hard to support his family and has a strong sense of responsibility. Wilson tries to overturn the typical stereotype of African Americans, an image of lazy and foolish father formed by White people and to offer a positive image of African Americans.
