Gustav Klimt(1862-1918) is a representing artist who created a unique ornamental world by accepting East Asian art. The reason Klimt’ s painting has East Asian ornamental element remarkably was that artistic handicraft movement that pursued naturalism led by Morris in England in the late 19th century also happened in Vienna, Austria. Klimt experienced East Asian art when a number of Japanese crafts and some of Korean and Chinese crafts were introduced in an international exhibition held in Vienna in 1873. Especially, he was inspired by East Asian crafts by frequently visiting the museum affiliated in his school and the history museum, and expanded his East Asian artistic experiences through the international exhibition. Furthermore, he could be exposed to various arts of East Asia through reading , developing his ornamental painting. The three categories of East Asian art that inspired his ornamental painting are geometric abstract motive, natural motive and concrete objects. These seem to be affected by J apanese art that was reflected to the 19th century Europe. Klimt, who was fascinated by Japanese art, created new ornamental painting with inverse perspective during the process of accepting Jugend Stil, which was popular those days. Inother words, he introduced powerful contrast of colors, distinct contour and repetitive technique, and when he used these methods, he came up with ornamental painting with East Asian mood by using various patterns. Therefore, his painting world became unified organically in the ostensibly splendid ornamental world, and then developed into profound fantastical world.
