This paper aims to examine the city as a text focusing on Seize the Day of Saul Bellow. The problems of cities in modern civilization have been hot issues in social and cultural studies. Recently urban studies have deeply concerned the city space. And also they can be combined with their theories of literary works. In reading those spaces of capitalist cities like New York in Seize the Day through the space theory such as Henri Lefebvre in the social studies, novels could get to understand many conflicts around modern cities. The city, New York in the novel accelerates the alienation and conflicts of the protagonist, Tommy Wilhelm. However, the city space doesn't simply represent the urban place. It has more complicated meanings. In the end of the novel, Tommy has the possibilities of reconciliation with self and the world in New York, in spite of a capitalist city.
