The purpose of the study is to analyze non-verbal behaviors co-occurring with exclamation which shows a speaker’s intention and emotion. The motivation to select exclamation in this study is that exclamations are involved in range from conventional utterances to personal utterances and that they can frequently occur with non-verbal behaviors to emphasize a speaker’s intention and emotion. Based on my survey on non-verbal behaviors co-occurring with exclamations, head movements were found most frequently. Specifically, exclamations signifying agreements and disagreements are most salient. In the case that functional exclamations regarding discourse structure appear, facial features are salient and in particular gaze aversion. Hand movements with exclamation related to turn- keeping can be grouped as adaptors.
