From April 1, 1933, The Dong-A Daily News (DDN) implemented new spelling system the details of which differ from Tong'iran while sharing the dominant principal. On October 29, 1933, the day Tong'iran was announced, the DDN declared the revision of its spelling rules according to Tong'iran, but there were a few exceptions which DDN stick to its own rules including the diphthong ㅖ[ye] and the final consonant ㅆ[ss]. This shows the conflict between the standard spelling rules and the linguistic reality in the early stage of the language standardization. While Tong'iran prescribed using ㅖ after ㄱ[g], DDN adhere to ㅔ[e]. The pronunciation of [gye] only existed in Seoul and it was pronounced as [ge] in the other regions. Moreover, the final consonant ㅆ was also pronounced in the central district around Seoul. The final consonant ㅆ is used in the high frequency words such as 있- and the grammatical morphemes delivering tense, aspect, and mood such as -었- and -겠-. Therefore, if DDN had replaced the conventional final consonant ㅅ with ㅆ, the majority of its readers could have been repulsed by this unfamiliar spelling. What caused this disparity between Tong'iran (ㅖ, ㅆ) and DDN (ㅔ, ㅅ) is the different concept of the standard language. While Tong'iran considered Seoul dialect the standard as manifested in is general provisions, DDN regarded the pronunciation of the majority as the norm. This conflict reflects the different objective of Joseoneohakoe and DDN; while the former pursued the unification of the language on behalf of the official state power in colonial period, the latter, as a private company, had to secure nationwide sales network and increase its circulation.
