Lee, Seung Jae. 2015. A Comparative Analysis on Gender Language and Neutralization in Use: With Focus on College Students. The Journal of Studies in Language 31.2, 399-425. Language is a cultural asset to reflect and record sociocultural phenomenon in one speech community. This study focuses on gender differences in language use following Lakoff (1975; 2004); Lakoff argued that women tend to use linguistic forms that reflect and reinforce a subordinate role, which is represented by tag questions, and weak directives, grammatical standards, or grammatical vocabularies. The previous research on gender difference in Korean by Lee & Hong (2003) ensured Lakoff’s characteristics on women’s speech. A decade later, the same questionnaires were used to survey college students of men and women in early 20s in 2014, and the results were compared. Interestingly, 2014 survey results show clear distinction from those of 2003; the women’s language has been changed to be more aggressive and direct, and the amount of using bad words or slangs is increment; whereas man’s language is softened in general using suggested or indirect forms. In particular, the shorter form or the shorter sentence is preferred in delivering a message, and the use of emoticons is noticeable due to the effect of SNS. Consequently this paper confirms the direction of language evolution, which is on the process of neutralizing the gender differences between men and women. (Kyunghee University)
