Mass spectrometry imaging is an emerging technique providing an important insight into chemical profiles varied by cellular heterogeneity in the biological systems. The region-specific ionizations in an untargeted and unlabeled manner support multiplexed biomolecular imaging together with molecular capabilities of mass spectrometry. The unique range of molecular detection from endogenous to exogenous molecules could supplement the prevalent biological imaging based on immunohistochemistry. However, mass spectrometric ionization has a limited application to biobanked tissue specimens preserved in standard formaldehyde fixation which blocks the ionizable moieties of analytes.
