The purpose of this study is to investigate the formal, syntactic and semantic differences between 「unmarked potential sentence」 and 「paired non-intentional intransitive sentence」, 「marked potential sentence」 First, I Investigated the formal, syntactic and semantic differences between 「paired non-intentional intransitive sentence」 and 「unmarked potential sentence」. The research indicated that 「paired non-intentional intransitive sentence」 and 「unmarked potential sentence」 take the same form and syntactic structure. But semantically,　the latter expresses a potential meaning, and the former does not. And then I Investigate the formal, syntactic and semantic differences between 「unmarked potential sentence」 and 「marked potential sentence」. The research indicated that 「unmarked potential sentence」 takes the intransitive verb, and 「marked potential sentence」 takes the potential form such as “potential verb”, “reruㆍrareru” and “kotogadekiru”. Syntactically the former takes an intransitive sentence which has [Y] as the subject(the object of the transitive sentence), and the latter takes a potential sentence of transitive sentence which has [X] as the subject(Agent). Semantically 「unmarked potential sentence」 and 「marked potential sentence」express a potential meaning. But the former focuses on the state of [Y], and the latter focuses on the ability or situation of [X].
