This paper examines the way speakers construe meanings in terms of stance marking by discussing English and Korean words. First, the changes in the meanings of two English adverbs, yet and still will be discussed. We will show the meaning change mechanism and speaker’s evaluation construing the meaning of concession in a grammaticalization perspective. Looking into the process of emergence of concessive meaning, we will discuss stance marking and mirative. Second, we also discuss the meaning change of Korean particles -kkaci, -mace and -cocha in terms of grammaticalization. The English and Korean words in question do not share the source meaning. However, by comparing those we can understand the way speakers construe the meaning derivation.
