Marriage between free people and unfree people was strictly prohibited in the laws of the early Frankish kingdom. From the latter half of the 8th century, when the Carolingian age began, while slaves' right to marry other slaves was recognized and marriage between statuses is actually permitted to some extent, the prohibition was still being maintained. Despite the prohibition, we can see a considerable number of marriages between statuses, mainly between servile man and free woman, and a rising trend of inter-status marriages in the polyptychs of the early and middle 9th century. A cause of such a marriage phenomenon could be an unfree man's effort to marry a woman having superior status. But we suggest that the basic cause of this phenomenon is the development of the classic manorialism system, providing economic conditions where peasant from slave status can possess the same size of tenure and the same duties as peasant from freeman.
