Structuralism is still problematic. In this article, we review the notion of structure used by Saussure, and compare it with Lacan’s concept of hyperstructure. We argue that structure in Saussure, qua analogical structure, serves as the locus where the speaker can “create” new lexical terms. Contrary to common belief, linguistic structure (Saussurian & Jakobsonian structure) includes within itself a place for the linguistic subject. We then offer a close examination of analogy in terms of linguistics. Lacan’s “structure”, on the other hand, is not a linguistic term at all. It is rather the hyperstructure in the vein of human science. a term that specifically can refer to the hyperstructure of human desire, etc. “Signifiant” as used by Lacan is also irrelevant to linguistics. The only interface between two strains of structuralism is the mathematical minimalism of Euclidian epistemology.
