After the publication of The Game of Contemporaneity in 1979, Kenzaburō Ōe continued to write short stories and novellas in the 1980s and 1990s. Unlike his male-centered writings of the past, women in the “forest and canyon” were repeatedly depicted in these stories, beginning with The Game of Contemporaneity and continuing on through Women Listening to the “Rain Tree,” Rouse Up, O, Young Men of the New Age! and How to Kill a Tree. This paper mainly focuses on How to Kill a Tree, a collection of Kenzaburō Ōe’s short stories. Furthermore, it clarifies the relationship among the great women, forest mythology and its inheritance, and analyzes the parts they play in these short stories. Finally, it studies the reasons for and significance of why Kenzaburō Ōe created these works from the perspectives of women.
