This paper is intended as an investigation of the sports discourses in magazines and their reception in postwar Japan through focusing on soccer magazines from the 1960s to the 1970. Concretely, the aim of this paper is to show how sports were discussed in magazines and to consider what meaning the act of reading sports through the medium of magazines, so to speak reading sports, had at the time for Japanese society and sports culture. First, examining soccer discourses in early soccer magazines, we demonstrate that soccer was written about as an intellectual sport. Such soccer discourses centering on the idea of intellectual sports were generated by officials from the Japan Football Association who were affiliated with the educational elite. Thus, in asserting the importance of reading, there is a suggestion that they sought a connection to culturalism, the highbrow culture in Japanese universities until the 1970s. What is more, in the process, readers accepted the legitimacy of soccer, which was regarded as a minor sport at that time, by viewing it as an intellectual sport and by sharing the values implicit in such a view through reading soccer magazines. Behind this was the inferiority complex which writers in and readers of soccer magazines felt regarding baseball. The code of reading sports, which these discourses in the magazines and their reception promoted, played a part in the formation of Japanese soccer culture in the postwar era.
