This study aims to provide basic data to create comfortable environments of public facilities for users, by examining characteristics of public facilities, including sizes and arrangement, the status of management and use, and the needs of residents and suggesting environment improvement plans, based on public facilities of 44 complexes in Daegu. It is anticipated that the research on community facilities, which are sharing facilities of apartment housing, expected to occupy the highest proportion of the housing style, would serve as basic data for housing design in future. Moreover, this study would be helpful in understanding regional apartment housing community facilities by showing different findings from the existing studies targeting the capital area, since this study is based on Daegu area. The study results are as follows. In accordance with the ‘Regulations on Housing Construction Standards’ and the ‘Culture and Arts Promotion Act’, in Korean apartment housing complexes, it is compulsory to build a variety of public facilities, such as a residents’ common facility, a center for senior citizens, a library, a daycare facility, in addition to a notice and a work of art. It is thought that public facilities were installed to deal with the needs of occupants or to assign added value, considering that many of them were installed even in the complexes with no obligation to install. Compared to the installation standards, the installation scale of management offices, centers for senior citizens libraries and residents’ common facilities was irregular and these public facilities show features of individual complexes. Many of indoor public facilities were centralized type and group type. Independent type and block type were primary installation locations and the proportion of these two types was almost the same. Among various public facilities, playgrounds gained the highest recognition from residents and it was followed by centers for senior citizens and rest facilities. But over 30% of residents did not know that there were daycare facilities, libraries, residents’ common facilities and outdoor exercise facilities. Over 90% of residents using centers for senior citizens and daycare facilities used them ‘almost everyday’ and many of them used meeting rooms ‘once or twice a month’. It was revealed that in Korean apartment housing complexes, public facilities were bigger than those defined in the installation standards or there were so many public facilities, but some of them stopped operations due to circumstances of complexes. Although facilities to build and facility sizes are prescribed depending on the number of households, it is required to establish standards considering awareness of residents or the types of use.
