This study analyzes the relationship between culture and design on how culture affects designers’ thoughts and expressions. Based upon literature reviews and pre-studies, culture is epitomized into its definition, characteristics and stages of development. Case studies also help to identify designers’ works along with their cultural thoughts. Differences in culture represent the differences in ideas, while education plays key roles in making the ideas into use as well as acquiring skills for applications. Cultural design thinking is formed via divergent thoughts by designers who have experienced or contemplated with diverse cultural backgrounds. It is also defined as a relationship among culture, design thinking and its expression. These kinds of thoughts are influenced in the design process and designers melt culture into their works, visual or non-visual alike. Uchida Shigeru’s design is expressed by in-depth understanding of spiritual, physical and behavioral stages of culture, which is applied into spaces in Japanese ways, reflecting its physical and spiritual traditions.
