This paper examines how the obsession of chastity in Korean pop culture is formed and strengthened. In order to do this, this paper traced the process of forming the ideology of chastity in the colonial Joseon where the modern order of Korea begins. This paper also analyzed the process of popular propagation of the ideology of chastity. First of all, in the dimension of discourse, the ideology of chastity was strengthened by the influence of eugenics. In eugenics, It was needed to keep our bodies healthy and to keep our blood clean to produce good children. In the case of women, It was needed to keep virginity because sexual intercourse with men changed blood. And next, on the cultural level, the ideology of chastity was typified and spread in popular novels. The innocent image of the virgin was ideal spouse, but because she was the object that could not have easily, she also functioned as the object that stimulus the desire. Because of the double role, the image of a pure virgin could be consumed sensationally in popular culture. As the virginity of virgins became important for being good mothers, virgins were recognized as social subjects. And as a pure virgin was portrayed as a beautiful image, a virgin was considered an ideal being. As a result, the ideology of chastity was voluntarily practiced by women. At thesame time, however, the ideology of chastity excluded virgins who could not be mother from society. A spinster who could not marry lost a chance to be a member of a whole society. the ideology of chastity does not currently work on the surface in Korea, but it is still used as a logic to control the sexuality of women in the background of everyday life.
