This study revolves around Chung Sik Geh’s doctorate (PHD) thesis KOREANISCHE MUSIK which considers the impacts of modern desire and cultural shock on the inward formation and music career of young Chung Sik Geh. First of all, through Geh’s travel essays crossing of Europe and essays published by 『Dong-A Daily News』, Geh’s experience of Western Culture was a process of visually confronting cultural imagination that is already known. By people of colony met whilst sailing across Europe, he faced both his reality and modernized sight that scorned them. Through this process, he experienced the superiority of the Western culture. Shocking cultural unfamiliarity of the West faced when he was studying in Germany kept causing him to compare and contrast the difference between the reality of the West and colony, Korea. Although he took Korean Music as the subject of his thesis, the essential characteristics of Korean Music were not reflected due to his low level of understanding the Western Music. Thus, his ambition towards civilization grew stronger and when he returned back to Korea after 13 years of studying in Germany, he was no longer interested in his nation. Realization of the West concluded with a tragic end by showing his support to the imperialism of Japan. However, Geh is just one individual of many other intellectuals whom experienced the colonial period. Furthermore, many intellectuals during Japanese colonial Era believed modernization is in fact civilization. In consequence, they believed the future of Korean Traditional Music is Westernizing.
