This paper explores the impact of microcredit on women empowerment and economic wellbeing based on information from household surveys in Southern Vietnam. Results show that microcredit access has a small but strong impact on women empowerment, measured by the empowerment index. However, this is accompanied by an increase in household public goods rather than women’s share of personal expenditure. The results support theories under the general framework of non-cooperative bargaining which suggest that microcredit programs that are more inclusive of male participation constitutes an environment under which women are more likely to benefit from access to credit in patriarchal societies.
