This paper examines the relationship between the Endo Shusaku literature and the unconscious world. By considering it, the following facts can be epitomized: Endo as a writer, who had Christian faith influenced by his mother in his childhood, created literary works, while feeling some pressure for the one and only God, as his own faith problem. Although he was successful as an author by winning an Akutagawa award, such a faith problem was an unsolved assignment to him. Meanwhile, he learned a literary technique through the unconscious world from Western Christian literature. From the realization that authentic self can be discovered in the unconscious world distinguished from the conscious world brought about conversion of the attitude as a writer. His works created via the unconscious world led to the development as a writer and the resolution of the faith problem. Woman I Betrayed published after he arose from his sickbed is an early work reflecting his thought about the unconsciousness. Through the scene of conflicts between conscious and unconscious worlds in Mitsu and Yosioka, Endo reconsidered the authentic self. Endo’s intention to meet his authentic self through the unconscious world beyond the superficial and conscious world is realized in this work.
