This paper focuses on the characteristics of media which appeared in Santo Kyouden’s Kibyoushi during the late Edo period. Kyouden had made use of every cultural aspect of Kibyoushi to achieve his goal through it. The materials and contents he used in his work became so popular and fashionable trends among people. Following the times of Akahon(red book cover) and Kurohon (black book cover), Kibyoushi was the textbook of pop cultures at that time. Starting as an Ukiyoe painter, Kyouden soon wrote two significant books to represent the culture of the late Edo period such as Gozonjino Shoubaimono and Edoumare Uwakino Kabayaki. Besides, the other work where we could find the Kibyoushi‐characteristics of media is Fukunotane Warau Kadomatsu. It was made with the same wood blocks as those used in the previous year but it revived through totally different stories which included eleven short stories. Most of all, the feature of wood block printing of Kibyoushi enabled Kyouden to create another Kibyoushi with original wood blocks but with the whole new stories. In other words, this was one of the ways for Edo people to enjoy popular books, and Kyouden was a writer who could see through the core of parody cultures.
