We use pragmatic inference even when figuring out what the speaker is explicitly saying as well as guessing what is implicated behind the literal meaning. In the framework of the relevance theory, explicature, which is a hybrid of linguistic meaning and pragmatic inference, plays an important role in the utterance comprehension process. This study aims to stipulate what kind of pragmatic processes affect the derivation of explicatures. In previous research, Carston states following four pragmatic processes contribute to recovering explicatures; disambiguation, saturation, free enrichment, and ad-hoc concept construction. However, there are no reasons to separate the four processes into partially pragmatic processes such as saturation and disambiguation or fully pragmatic processes like free enrichment and ad-hoc concept construction. This is because explicatature derivation processes are all guided by pragmatic principles. Therefore, the authors suggest that pragmatic processes which are involved in deriving explicatures can be summed up into pragmatic meaning selection process and pragmatic enrichment process.
