과소출생아로 태어난 신생아는 출생 후 적절한 영양 공급이 이루어지지 않으면 성장부진과 신경발달의 장애와 같은 장기적 예후에 영향을 받을 위험성이 높다. 반면, 과소체중아로 출생한 만삭아에서의 과도한 영양 섭취에 따른 빠른 따라잡기 성장은 오히려 장기적으로 대사 합병증과 심혈관계 질환의 위험성을 높이므로 건강에 해로울 수 있다. 미숙아의 경우에는 영양공급을 위한 노력에도 불구하고 퇴원 시점에서 상당수가 여전히 저체중 상태인 경우가 많아 영아기 동안 지속적으로 충분한 영양공급을 받아서 적절한 따라잡기 성장을 하도록 돕는 것이 권장되는 반면, 만삭아에서는 모유 수유를 기본으로 하여 너무 빠르거나 과도한 체중증가가 일어나지 않도록 영양 섭취를 하는 것이 권장된다. 따라서, 과소체중아에서의 적절한 성장을 위한 영양 지원은 근거를 바탕으로 하여 개별적으로 접근하여야 할 것이다.
