In September 1961, scientists from the North Korean Academy of Sciences unveiled their country’s first digital computer. The national press praised the scientists’ machine, both for its potential benefits to the national economy and for having been built with domestic materials and without foreign assistance. From a critical discussion of this narrative, the present article analyzes the physical and discursive construction of this “national computer”, tracing its origins to Soviet designs, the “self- reliant” production of semi-conductors from industrial byproducts and the percolation of the concept of juche in scientific discourse in the late 1950’s. Highlighting a number of little known technological exchanges between the DPRK and the world, it moves to show how this relationship between technology imports and the state’s rhetoric of self- reliance continued to influence the economy and culture of the DPRK throughout the Cold War.
