서정주의 자서전 ｢천지유정｣와 ｢속 천지유정｣은 그의 시정신이 냉전 체제와 밀접한 관련이 있음을 보여준다. 냉전체제에서 불안과 공포, 그리고 불신과 겁에 사로잡힌 서정주는 역사에 대한 공포와 혐오를 동시에 느꼈다. 서정주는 해방을 맞으면서 역사를 이해할 수 없고 예측할 수 없는 것으로 인식하고, 역사현실로부터 자유로운 세계를 시로 구축하고자 했다. 서정주는 친일 이력으로 인해 해방 직후 신변의 불안을 느꼈으며, 이후 냉전 체제 하에서 어떤 형태로든 정치권력으로부터 안전하게 자신을 보호하고 싶어 했다. 그는 자신의 신경쇠약과 환청을 과학문명의 ‘기계력’으로부터 오는 것으로 받아들였다. 서정주는 냉전체제의 감시와 검열의 시스템이 정신의 분열을 촉발하는 것을 문제적으로 인식했지만, 이것을 서구 문명의 성격에 기인하는 것으로 파악했다. 그는 이를 극복하기 위해 ‘한국적인 것’, ‘한국적인 심성’을 발굴하는데 전력을 다했다. 서정주가 시로 구축하고자 한 ‘한국적인 것(심성)’은 역사와 전통을 기반으로 한 것이라기보다는 미래의 한국, 즉 서정주가 소망하는 한국의 상(像)에 바쳐진 것이었다. 그는 생활 경험 속에서 매개와 사유 없이 주관적이고 직관적인 이미지를 ‘한국적인 것’으로 명명했는데, 이는 서정주가 해방 이후 수립된 대한민국을 ‘역사 다음의 새로운 세계’로 인식했던 것과 결부되어 있다. 서정주의 자기서사에 나타난 냉전 체제의 현실은 한국의 대다수 국민들의 집단적이고 보편적 경험 세계이기도 했다. 서정주의 시정신과 시(쓰기)는 냉전체제의 한 산물이지만 반공/국가주의의 관철로 보기는 어렵다. 우리는 그에게서 철저히 자신의 경험과 주관적 이미지에 의존하는 개인주의적 주체의 모습을 발견하게 된다. 억압적인 냉전체제에서 생존의 위협을 느끼고 피폐해지는 경험을 한 서정주는 이 문제를 ‘(정치적) 자유’의 부재로 인식하지 않았다. 그는 안정과 안도감을 느낄 수 있는 세계, 인간의 자연스러운 심성이 작동하는 데 방해됨이 없는 세계를 지향했다. 이는 역사와 정치에 얽히고 싶지 않았던 일반 대중들의 욕망과 겹치는 것이기도 했다.

Seo Jeongju’s autobiography ｢Cheonjiyujeong｣ and ｢Cheonjiyujeong-continued｣ shows that his poetic spirit is closely connected with the Cold War system. Under the cold war system, Seo Jeongju was caught by anxiety, fear, distrust and cowardice and felt fear and hatred towards history. He recognized history as something that could not be understood nor predicted as he encountered liberation, and tried to construct a world free from the historical reality with poetry. Due to his pro-Japanese history, Seo Jeongju felt uneasiness on his side immediately after liberation, and wanted to keep himself safe from political powers in any form under the subsequent cold war system. He took his nervous breakdown and auditory hallucination as coming from machine power of science civilization. Although Seo Jeongju recognized surveillance and censorship of the cold war system triggering schizophrenia as a problem, he identified it as being originated from fundamental character of western civilization. To overcome this he did all he could in excavating 'Things korean', 'Korean nature‘. 'Things korean (nature) that Seo Jeongju wanted to construct as a poetry was devoted to Korea of the future, i.e. the image of Korea that Seo Jeongju wished, rather than being based on history and tradition. In his experience, he named 'Things korean' through subjective and intuitive images without a medium or reason. This is associated with the fact that Seo Jeongju recognized Korea established after liberation as a 'new world after the history'. This seems to be a result of real recognition where the desire to break away from the pro-Japanese memory of colonial era and the desire for individual's safety in the cold war system were coupled. The reality of cold war system appeared in the self narration of Seo Jeongju was also the collective and universal experience world of most Korean. It is difficult to consider the poetic spirit and poetry (writing) of Seo Jeongju as attainment of anti-communism/nationalism while it is a product of the cold war system. From him, we get to find an appearance of individualistic principal agent who thoroughly depends on his own experience and subjective images. Seo Jeongju who felt threats to survival and had experience of getting impoverished under the oppressive cold war system did not recognize this problem as absence of '(political) freedom'. He aimed at the world that allowed him to feel stable and relief, the world without obstruction of operation of human's natural heart. This overlapped with the desire of general public of that time who did not want to be entangled with history and politics.
