Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the anti-bacterial activity of various functional toothpastes against Streptococcus mutans, the most common oral bacteria causing dental caries. Methods: Toothpastes were selected based on their function, including whitening toothpaste (WT), fluoride toothpaste (FT), toothpaste for sensitive teeth (ST), toothpaste for gingivitis (GT) and toothpaste for oral malodor (OT). Each toothpaste was selected to have a high content of functional ingredients. The most common toothpaste was selected as a positive control (PC); 1% hydroxyethylcellulose was used as an negative control toothpaste formulated without an antimicrobial agent. Activated S. mutans were plated on an agar medium, wells were bored, and experimental toothpastes were loaded. After 24 hours of incubation at 37℃, the antimicrobial activity of each toothpaste was evaluated. Results: The mean inhibition zones of the experimental groups was measured as 21.0 mm in WT, 16.6 mm in OT, 15.7 mm in PC, 14.5 mm in ST, 12.6 mm in FT, and 6.1 mm in GT. Conclusions: The anti-bacterial activity of the functional toothpastes against S. mutans was highest with WT and lowest with GT. In the future, research and development of toothpastes showing each function with strong basic antimicrobial effect on S. mutans will be needed.
