Due to the call of necessity and urgency of mature “spirituality” and “personality” among Korean Christians and missionaries, this study is designed to demonstrate “seven motivators” for spiritual formation based upon Kenneth Boa’s Conformed to His Image which are also present in the Apostle Paul’s mission work. In doing so, this study might be beneficial for those who are involved in missions and yearn to develop deeper spiritual formation. The seven motivators include: “no other options,” “the fear of the Lord,” “love and gratitude,” “rewards,” “our identity in Christ,” “purpose and hope,” and “longing for God.” In Paul’s mission work, “no other option” was a motivator that led him to begin his mission work after encountering Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus. This motivator helped Paul overcome “a thorn in the flesh” (2 Cor 12:7-10) and “a peril of death” (2 Cor 1:8-9) that missionaries tend to encounter on the mission field. “The fear of the Lord” was also Paul’s source of motivation, the foundation of wisdom, the awareness of a magnificent God, and the source of his value system. The source of Paul’s value system in mission work specifically challenges contemporary missiology in a culture that promotes and encourages religious pluralism (2 Cor 10:5-6; Col 2:3). At the same time, “love and gratitude” was a strong motivator that directed Paul to dedicate his life to mission work. Rewards also motivated Paul to focus on his ultimate purpose: pleasing God (1 Cor 10:31) as most missionaries and Christians desire. Paul’s confidence in his identity with Christ as an Apostle encouraged him to share the Gospel first to the Jews and then the Gentiles. As a missionary, Paul cultivated an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through a “longing for Christ,” knowing Jesus Christ more, His death, and resurrection (Phil 3:7-11). As an exemplary missionary, Paul demonstrated a well-balanced spiritual formation as one examines his mission work in light of seven motivators. Thus, missionaries and believers can learn biblical spiritual formation from Paul and apply it to their lives and missions for the sake of God’s kingdom until Jesus Christ comes.
