This study attempts to examine, centering on murals of CitéCréation, what Lyon's case of using murals successfully in cultural urban re- generation suggests from the contents of cultural memories and the role of preserving and utilizing actors. Closely linked to Lyon's place, figure, and event, the majority of the co-operative's murals exclude 'memory' as 'pre- sent life' and rely too much on 'history' as 'expression of the past' in order to maintain the city's reputation, thus it can be said that the cultural mem- ory shows a serious imbalance. In order to remedy this imbalance, it is necessary to restore the residents' memory by making the depictions of their current lives main in the murals. Among the actors of memory pres- ervation and utilization, artists(CitéCréation) discovered and expressed local cultural heritage and developed expertise, residents participated as charac- ters or actively led the creation of murals, and local governments set up policies and made subsidies to make murals possible. Therefore, when pro- moting urban regeneration and revitalization using murals, the involved such as artists, residents, and local governments should play an active role together as in Lyon.
