The purpose of this study is to analyze the classification and characteristics of design method for library furniture, and provide basic data of reference for differentiated library architectural design by classifying applicable symbolism. In order to understand the method of various symbols applied to library furniture, it classifies the concept and type of the current library, the type of library space and furniture, and examines its function and role. In case study, the examples of symbolic design applied to actual library furniture are investigated and analyzed, and classified the symbolism of library designed furniture. The results as follows; first, library designed furniture is defined as the furniture designed with a unique concept for the library. Second, the types of library space for user are classified as reading space, culture space and public space. Third, the types of library furniture are classified as reading furniture, storage furniture, reading-storage furniture and rest furniture. Recently, library furnitures are changing into complex furniture and architectural furniture. Fourth, the application types of symbolism of library designed furniture are classified as ‘metaphor and analogy’, ‘reinterpretation and imitation’ and ‘semiotic symbol’. And symbolic objects are classified as locality, vision, historicality, library theme, surroundings and history, user characteristics, and specific commemorations. As a result of examining through case studies, the application type of symbolism tends to be complex rather than clearly defining only one. Library furniture should be treated as the most important architectural element because it fills most of the library space and is used by users in direct contact. To this end, many of the library furniture should be designed as design furniture with symbolicity that can express the identity of the library, and this will give users an impressive spatial experience and will be imprinted as a space to find again and a place to stay.
