This paper argues that The American Trilogy comprised of American Pastoral(1997), I Married a Communist (1998), and The Human Stain (2000) show how individual identity embodies national identity and how the forces of American history threaten to overtake personal freedom and individual agency. American Pastoral revolves around Swede Levov, his attempts to assimilate into the melting pot of WASP society, and how his daughter's involvement in radical anti-Vietnam politics destroyed this pursuit of the "American dream." I Married a Communist recounts the life of Ira Ringold and how his political ties to leftist causes his political persecution in the 1950s, instigated in many ways by the tell-all memoirs of his former wife, and former silent movie actress, Eva Frame whose book is also titled I Married a Communist. In The Human Stain, the protagonist Colemans Silk, classics professor and former Dean of Athena College, finds himself marginalized through the politically correct machinations of his colleagues, much in the way that Clinton was hounded by right-wing Republicans. Nathan Zuckerman, the narrator, depicts the downfall of three protagonists; Swede Levov in American Pastoral, Ira Ringgold in I Married a Communist and Coleman Silk in The Human Stain. Considering why the main characters have no choice but to face tragedy, this thesis indicates that protagonists' falls result not only from the main character's tragic error, but also from violence and anarchy of the society, thought stuck in one idea or ideology, and political correctness based entirely on hypocrisy and prejudice. Reconsidering the key historical moments of post-World War Ⅱ: the red purge heydays of McCarthyism in the 1950s, radical anti-Vietnam war in the 1960s, and President Bill Clinton’s impeachment in the 1990s, Roth reveals the façade and irony of the political and social structures in the 20th century America. As a writer, Roth analyses the relationship between the public and private life of people in America and examines the social health of America in his intensely intelligent way.
