This paper provides an overview of interpreting madness using Shakespeare’s and Cervantes’s works. The time when Shakespeare and Cervantes were active was a time of madness where chaos and change coexist. According to a study by Michel Foucault, madness was not considered a disease in ancient times, but rather a mystical phenomenon that approached God and showed origin, and through various forms during the Renaissance, ‘madness’ was also seen as a positive factor. He thought that madness could pursue a fantastic truth that could not be proved by science or rational logic, and that there were some cases of genius through madness. Two genius writers, Shakespeare and Cervantes, show not only ghostly and magical supernatural phenomena, but also the wandering of the crazed characters in their works, Hamlet and Don Quite. Through their works, they unleashed madness, a festive and utopian energy, in the lives of the people oppressed by the ruling forces and norms. Two writers stimulated real-life readers and made them see the world from a new perspective. Shakespeare and Cervantes opened the door to the Renaissance period through madness, implementing the value of human liberation from restraint and leading the great change of ‘human discovery.’
