Islet transplantation for type 1 diabetes has been limited by islet donor shortage and the requirement for lifelong immunosuppression. Both of these barriers have spurred interest in 3D encapsulation devices, which could allow for immunoprotected transplantation of insulin-producing cells from a variety of readily available sources. While promising, conventional devices rely on passive diffusion to support encapsulated cells, constraining these devices to 2D wafer-like geometries to maintain cells within the diffusion distance of the capsule membrane.
