Sexology, which flourished in Europe in the 19th century, regards sexuality as representative of an individual’s personality. It is a discipline that classifies individuals as “correct” or “incorrect” based on their sexualities and ostracizes those with non-normative sexualities. Sexology, which led to the establishment of norms pertaining to sexuality in modern Western civil society, began to be imposed in Japan between the end of the Meiji era and the beginning of the Showa era, and the idea reached colonial Chosun through Japan. Previous studies have pointed out that sexology became known in Chosun, mainly by intellectuals who had studied in Japan and delved into sexological works through Japanese materials. However, this paper raises the question of whether there are any aspects of sexology in Chosun that differ from the sexology prevalent in Japan and, by extension, in the West.
One of the findings of this study was that Western sexology considered confessions of individuals regarding their non-normative or “perverted” sexual desires as “cases,” relying on such information to substantiate their sexological theory. In addition, Japanese sexology reproduced sexological discourses according to such a mechanism. However, since the social and literary backgrounds of Chosun differed significantly from that of Japan and the West, individual confessions are not found when searching the works in which the knowledge of sexology was stated. Therefore, this study attempts to investigate such differences to clarify how sexology in Chosun progressed differently than in Japan, despite its Japanese sources.
