In China, the image of bamboo represents the gentleman, the wise man, and the gods. In addition, ethically, it likens or symbolizes innocence, fidelity, emptiness, virtue, and justice. In contrast, in Buddhist scriptures made in India, bamboo is often used in sentences that symbolize bad things or things. So, in this thesis, among the bamboo images found in the Buddhist scriptures, the negative ones were searched and summarized as follows.
1) The appearance of lush bamboo sticking together is like obsession, the cause of suffering.
2) The bamboo flowers and fruits symbolize sickness and greed.
3) Compare the destruction that anger brings to people to the splitting of bamboo. Since banana tree and reed also have ecological characteristics similar to bamboo, these three plants are always compared to diseases, greed, and anger.
4) It compares the decay of a dead body with an insect eating a bamboo leaf, and a bamboo hole is an example of a dirty place where small creatures are generated.
However, the above are completely different from the bamboo in Chinese poetry and prose. In China, the same appearance is interpreted as follows.
1) The luxuriant bamboo stands for justice as they depend on each other to coexist.
2) The bamboo fruits are food for the phoenix. Therefore, its flowers and fruits are an auspicious symbol of the coming of the phoenix.
3) The bamboo is a sacred plant that conveys the Way of Sage because it is made by splitting bamboo to make a bamboo books.
As such, it can be seen that the Chinese and Indians had different views on the shape of bamboo. Then there is no need to be caught up in one fixed concept or notion of bamboo. In other words, if you break stereotypes, you can learn various and rich images. A lot of common sense or knowledge that is traditionally and uncritically taken for granted is in fact nothing more than a habit or custom.
