Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of hair loss in the adult population worldwide. Its prevalence is estimated to range from 50% to 73% in men, with significant variation according to age. AGA also affects women but less frequently than men. Although AGA is not a life-threatening condition, its negative psychosocial impact is well established. The exact molecular etiology of AGA is not fully understood. However, previous research have indicated the pivotal role of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a specific type of androgen, in the pathogenesis of AGA. In genetically susceptible individuals, DHT induces progressive scalp hair miniaturization and eventual irreversible hair loss starting usually from adulthood.
