Objectives: In the modern data realm, blockchain has its profound advantage of transparency and security in distributed database storage technology. This study classified and analyzed application of blockchain in Korea and other nations and proposed application areas of blockchain in healthcare field, along with expected effect and limitations. Methods: Literature review was performed based on blockchain usecases corresponding to the healthcare field. And we additionally collected the details of the blockchain business through consultation with practicing professionals. Results: Three healthcare fields were recommended to adopt blockchain based on the application case analysis of 1) distribution history management, 2) safe sharing and management of personal health data, 3) streamlined administrative procedures, and 4) decentralized identifier. The three fields are Pharmaceutical Distribution History Management, Pharmaceutical Wholesaler Current Status Management, and Individual-driven Health Data Platform. Conclusion: Use of blockchain will enhance transparency in pharmaceutical distribution history management, which will contribute to simplified administrative procedure and data ownership of user. However, adoption of blockchain requires premise of participants’ consent and legal review on network structure. As this paper examined potential areas for blockchain application, next step would be gradual test and adoption of blockchain-applied safe and convenient medical information management and sharing measures.
