In this paper, I intend to shed a new light on Kim Dae-Jung’s political thoughts by analzing his nationalism and globalism. More specifically, I investigate the main characteristics and distinctiveness of his nationalism and globalism, and the way he reconciled the contradictory elements in the two ideologies. Nationalism takes a particular position in the overall framework of his political philosophy, since he generally put emphasis on the universal values, such as human equality, freedom, democracy etc. While he stressed the primordial ‘Weness’ in his nationalism, however, he never evinced exclusiveness on ‘Others’ as well. His nationalism, therefore, inherently contained the potential to overcome the narrow confinement of nationhood and advance towards globalism. Also, he elevated nationalism to the status of universalism by combining it with the universal values of democracy. Another effort to introduce universalism to his arguments of nationalism and globalism was his focus on the efficiency and the practicality of the market economy. He legitimated the necessity to ameliorate the diplomatic relationship both with North Korea and Japan on the basis of practical interests. Although he relied upon the rhetorics of nationalism and globalism in his attempts to facilitate the negotiations with North Korea and Japan, respectively, he anticipated enormous economic benefits from the amicable relationships with the two nations. This anticipation made him to pursue the future oriented policies during his presidency, despite the deep-wounded historical memories of Japanese colonial rule and the Korean war.
