This paper examines how Ha Jin deals with the trauma of Tiananmen Incident in The Crazed. Discourses on trauma by Caruth, Hirsch, and Kurtz provide critical ideas. Jin’s way of representing the trauma of Tiananmen Incident in the novel?characterized as trauma’s being delayed yet belatedly revealed at an unexpected moment?is explained with the help of critical insights from trauma studies. In addition, the significance of the main character Jian’s psychological growth is discussed in close relation to the progress of Jin’s literary pursuit, both of which can be characterized as anti-Bildungsroman. This study argues that the literary representation of trauma can serve as a way to preserve, and also to shape, historical experience so as to combat historical amnesia.
