The Korea Interior Design Qualification exam was launched in 2005 by Korean Society of Interior Architects/Designers(KOSID) and officially issued in 2017 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. Since then, this exam has qualified over 330 people as professional interior designers. It is about time to review its achievement and discuss the future directions of this qualification exam. This paper thus conducted a case study focusing on the National Council for Interior Design Qualification(NCIDQ) in the United States, which has been successfully putting the interior designer as an official profession in their society. The case study examined the required education, work experience, and the application for the exam, exam contents, and the rights and capabilities of the qualified interior designers. The result from the case analysis confirmed that Korean exam is more inclusive in terms of the required education and qualification for taking the exam. But, this exam needs more promotions to encourage more people to take. The NC!DQ tests examine solid practical knowledge and onsite applications. To improve the reliability of the Korean exam, it is thus necessary to put more practical and onsite knowledge. The study findings also emphasize the integrated design process which could embrace interior designers, architects, and related design professionals throughout the entire design process.
