Low temperature is a limiting factor to cultivate avocado (Persea americana) in temperate regions. Effects of short-term low temperature were investigated on the leaves of three-year-old ‘Hass’ avocado saplings exposed to 1, ‒2, or ‒5°C for 1 hr. Non-enzymatic antioxidant activity and photosynthetic response were determined by spectrophotometry and gas exchange model, respectively, 24 hrs after the treatment. Avocado leaves treated with 1 and ‒2°C maintained green color, while those treated with ‒5°C were browning. Chlorophyll contents did not change between leaves before treatment and treated with any temperature; total carotenoid and phenolic contents significantly increased in leaves treated with ‒5°C compared to others.
