Acer tegmentosum Maxim., commonly known as Manchurian striped maple, is a deciduous tree native to Northeast China, Russian Far East, and Korea. In Korea, this maple is locally known as “Beolnamu” or “Sancheong-mok”, and is used as a folk medicine for liver diseases. In addition, it has attractive stripes on the bark, which makes it high ornamental value. However, their habitat in Gangwon province and Mt. Jirisan is threatened by collection for medicinal purposes. Thus, conservation of this species may be important for commercial use and biodiversity. Here we found that water-permeable covering structures such as pericarp and testa had an important role on seeds with physiological dormancy (PD) of A. tegmentosum. Seeds of A. tegmentosum required prolonged cold stratification at 1-4°C for breaking PD, and 15/6°C is required for radicle emergence after cold stratification.
