This study demonstrates that the immunostimulating effect of a new lactic acid bacteria Bifidobacterium longum (JSRL 03, heat-inactivated) on RAW 264.7 macrophages and bone marrow derived macrophage cells (BMDM). First, the immunomodulating effect of JSRL 03 was investigated by measuring the amount of inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Treatment with JSRL 03 significantly increased NO, TNF-α, and IL-6 depending on the concentration. Also, up-regulation of these cytokines and NO by JSRL 03 was confirmed by increased expression of mRNA of TNF-α, IL-6 and iNOS.
